Stable Power, Happy Horses: Battery Energy Storage at the World’s Championship Horse Show

POWRBANK BESS at Kentucky State Fair 2024, powering the World's Championship Horse Show

The Kentucky State Fair used sustainable power to support the stables at the World’s Championship Horse Show. By integrating the POWR2 POWRBANK battery energy storage system (BESS) with a diesel generator, the event reduced fuel consumption, lowered CO2 emissions, and provided uninterrupted power to create a healthier environment for the horses and their owners.

The Challenge

The World’s Championship Horse Show is held annually at the Kentucky State Fair, with over 2,000 horses from across the globe competing for prestigious titles and prizes. With the event taking place during the peak summer heat in August, it is important to maintain a safe, comfortable environment for the horses. However, in previous years the event faced significant challenges due to power outages caused by issues with diesel generators. This resulted in the barns losing power, which compromised the cooling systems essential for the health and well-being of the prized horses. In 2024, the event organizers decided to find a more reliable and efficient power solution to ensure consistent power delivery and minimize disruptions.

The Solution

POWRBANK BESS at the Kentucky State Fair providing clean energy to the World's Championship Horse Show 2024.
  • Utilized 8 POWRBANK XPRO battery energy storage systems, each with an output capacity of 60 kW and a storage capacity of 120 kWh.

Determined to overcome the challenges of past years, the Kentucky State Fair turned to a hybrid power solution provided by United Rentals. Eight POWRBANK XPRO battery energy storage systems were selected for their proven reliability and efficiency in managing temporary power needs. Each POWRBANK XPRO featured an output capacity of 60 kW and a storage capacity of 120 kWh, providing ample power to ensure the smooth operation of the barns and their cooling systems. The POWRBANK systems were paired with 100 kW diesel generators, creating a hybrid setup that operated continuously throughout the event. With this setup, the diesel generators ran only to recharge the POWRBANKs, minimizing their runtime and reducing fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, and the potential for outages.

The majority of the POWRBANKs were used to power the stalls housing the competing horses. United Rentals was advised to plan for 200 amps per tent; actual power usage, however, would vary depending on how much electricity each horse stall required as determined by the horse owner. Two POWRBANKs were also used with diesel generators to provide power to the musical artists’ trailers at the Fair.

The Results

By utilizing the POWRBANK, the event saved approximately:

  • 760 gallons of fuel per day
  • 16,720 lbs. of CO2 per day

The hybrid setup delivered outstanding results, providing uninterrupted power throughout the entire event. Both the Fair organizers and horse owners were impressed by the system’s reliability, which was their main concern. The horse stalls were cooled around the clock, safeguarding the horses’ comfort and health.

The Fair also saw improvements in energy efficiency and a reduced environmental impact compared to previous years. Instead of diesel generators running 24/7, the generators ran for only 5 hours per day. This resulted in an approximate 79% decrease in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The POWRBANKs also provided an array of additional benefits. Unlike diesel generators, which produce significant noise and emissions, the POWRBANK battery energy storage systems operated quietly and produced no fumes. This created a more peaceful and healthier environment for the horses and their caretakers, reducing stress and improving the overall air quality in the stables.

The use of POWRBANKs at the World’s Championship Horse Show demonstrates the effectiveness of hybrid power solutions in delivering reliable, sustainable power for high-stakes events.
