Parallel Operation of Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems

Demonstration of large scale battery energy storage system operating in parallel.

Challenge:

An Energy Solutions Provider offering microgrid solutions needed flexible and scalable battery energy storage systems (BESS) to handle varying load conditions and requirements.

Solution:

Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems Operating in Parallel

POWR2’s POWRBANK MAX 250.500/480 battery energy storage system (BESS) was identified as the ideal solution due to its ability to operate in parallel. A standalone POWRBANK MAX BESS offers 250kW and 500kWh. Up to four POWRBANK MAX BESS can run in parallel.

Set Up:

  • Four POWRBANK MAX large-scale BESS (250kW/500kWh/480V)
    • Combined Capacity: 2MWh (500kWh x 4)
    • Combined Output: 1MW (250kW x 4)
  • 1.2MW Diesel Generator: To charge the POWRBANK MAX units

Result:

The POWRBANK MAX 250.500 is a flexible power solution for use in microgrid applications. Use cases range from supporting peak demand, minimizing disruption during planned outages, providing off-grid power during grid maintenance, supporting communities with weak grid infrastructure, and more.

Benefits of POWRBANK MAX large-scale battery energy storage systems include:

  • Clean, efficient power that ranges from 250kW to 1MW under varying load conditions.
  • Scalable energy storage capacity from 500kWh to 2MWh.
  • The ability to support varying loads and high-demand applications
  • Time-Based Peak Shaving: Ability to set the active/reactive power limits for charging or discharging based on a defined schedule and/or set load conditions to optimize energy use.
  • Enhanced grid stability and reduced energy costs.

POWRBANK users should consult POWR2 engineering with all application details to confirm that POWRBANK MAX paralleling is an acceptable solution.
